Beautiful cloudy full moon tonight. Kelly and I wondered: If Earth did not have a moon, but life on Earth had formed basically the same way, would we have gone to Mars instead of the Moon, or not bothered leaving orbit?

I would agree that we would have attempted Mars. Venus is closer but is inferior to Mars as a landing site. The technology to reach Mars is little different from that to reach the moon but would have taken another decade to accomplish.

I concur. The Space Race would have demanded it, but it would have taken longer.

The technology and other means to send astronauts to Mars and back exists today, but not the will. I'd love to see a human visit to Venus, but it's going to be impossible for generations. Still, one can dream.
