Sorry, but I just feel compelled to do this now, because the RB21 "discussion" (I think we can really call this one a "thread"!) is starting to encroach on Gay Marriage territory -- I had to wait for it to load just now!

Scott Hardie | October 10, 2007
You beat me to it. I had planned to introduce this exact same discussion tonight. While sitting in airports over the weekend, I browsed the site on my phone, and RB21 got so long that the download timed out, making it literally impossible to read. I think I became the first person in the history of TC to use the Pagination feature.

No disrespect to anyone who prolonged the other discussions to ask something new – your comments are always welcome.

This won't happen soon if it does happen, but I wonder if RB deserves its own discussion forum, away from TC? I don't want to clog TC with a subject that doesn't appeal to some of the regulars (not that we seem to talk about much else lately), and I wonder if having a more quick-n-dirty forum would make it more natural for people to start a new thread/discussion to ask for a certain trade, rather than continuing an ongoing conversation here? Just a thought.

And if any of you read this: Jackie? Anna? Steve Dunn? Jerry? Elliot? John and Mike from St Pete? Other site regulars? Are any of you ready to stick your toes in the RB pool and see if you like the water? The game got a flurry of activity at launch that resulted in a slight bad rap for being addictive, but after a cooling-off period, it has become what I imagined: A little turn-based game that brings you a few bite-sized bits of fun throughout the day, something neat to check when you go looking for entertainment online. I think you'd all like the game, and I know the other players would be happy to see a new face in the list.

Amy Austin | October 10, 2007
Word. ;-)

Aaron Shurtleff | October 10, 2007
So... no one actually looking for a trade?! Your title is misleading, and I have been deceived. :(

Amy Austin | October 10, 2007
Whiner.

Justin Woods | October 11, 2007
Russ I have the challenge of a life time for you I want to play for your extra R10 for my R9... What do you think!!!!

Russ Wilhelm | October 11, 2007
Let me think it over. I've removed it from the swap for now. I'll give you an answer in a day or so. It's time to get some sleep right now.

Scott Hardie | October 11, 2007
I don't think you're going to get a swap for it, Russ.

If Justin loses, can I get dibs on a second match? :-D

Amy Austin | October 11, 2007
Man, y'all sure are abusing Russ's good nature (i.e., RB generosity)!!!

(Russ, I'll play you my R6 for it.)

Justin Woods | October 11, 2007
(Never mind)

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
I couldn't have taken you up on that one anyway.

More important, since you want the card, does that mean I get to set the rules?

Justin Woods | October 12, 2007
Well that's going to suck for me, but if you do set the rules and I lose you do that for everyone that wants the card I assume... and only one request no double MJ... Then I am fine with it...

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
Slight bummer, because I was going to set the same rules for everyone, and one of those rules was to play at their highest level. The only way to do that with you was the double MJ, but if that's the only request, I can still do that for most others, since your the only one, so far, I actually could do that with.

You have a 4 to 1 card advantage over me, so that diversity gives you an advantage, in Russ math anyway. But setting the rules of engagement may even that out.

Look for the challenge within an hour, if it's not there, then you know I declined the sacrifice.

If it is there, know that at present, I am looking at it as a one shot deal per adversary till it's gone.

Justin Woods | October 12, 2007
Agreed...

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
You're right, the double MJ at your highest level would make it impossible for you to win if I set the rules right, so that is completely fair to rule that out. Also, as I've done in the past, and since it's a one chance only, your R9 doesn't mean any more to me than any other card, so if I win, the defender picks the card I take. They can do that once the round is over.

Justin Woods | October 12, 2007
So you mean I get to pick what card you get??? I don't get it...

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
Look at it this way. I was going to play someone who is at a very low level. I only needed to a) loose a card, or b) receive a very low level card at the exchange. Things went awry when I received a higher card at the exchange before losing a low card,. Getting a low card means I could now play that person. So it's a matter of power vs. opportunity.

Also, I know which card you're going after. If I put it on the block, that means I'm willing to part with it, on some level. Let's say you have like 20 R5's, which I think at one point you did, losing one of those wouldn't hurt you one way or the other.

So judge on my game, my worthiness, or some other quality, and your pain threshold. No card level is worth more than another to me right now. If I don't care for the card, I can swap it out. If the card gives me a rule I don't care to have, I'll swap it out.

Amy Austin | October 12, 2007
Russ... you do understand that was sarcasm on my part, right? I was only joking about offering to play my R6 for it...

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
I thought so Amy, But since I've been wrong before I was going to clarify it at some point, just to make sure.

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
Of course the double MJ is like painting a bullseye on my forehead.

Amy Austin | October 12, 2007
Don't get me wrong... I'm not thrilled that you won *another* R10/MJ card from the Exchange... but it just goes to show that if you wait long enough, it can happen. (Even, I guess, if you've only won three cards altogether...)

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
Scott, there seems to be a problem in the concert...

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: str_split() in /home/gootc/public_html/includes/functions/number.php on line 8

Yeah that was my third, the first MJ was my second, as soon as I clicked on the Exchange, I heard the "THUNK" as the arrow parted my hair.

Amy Austin | October 12, 2007
LOL

Scott Hardie | October 12, 2007
Should be working now. Get this: After all that trouble in September where my host upgraded me (unannounced) to PHP5 and we lost a day, they've now spontaneously reverted me to PHP4, causing str_split and a couple of other functions to break. But I learned my lesson and made it easy to adjust my code for either version, so we're back in business.

Amy Austin | October 12, 2007
!!!Ha -- amazing!!!

Russ Wilhelm | October 12, 2007
Sweet. You have to hate it when your hosting service holds you at their mercy.

Amy Austin | October 16, 2007
'Bout damn time I got another card. ;-p

Tony Peters | October 16, 2007
good band

Aaron Shurtleff | October 24, 2007
OK, seriously, I got a new R1card, and I absolutely hate the band to the point where I cannot stand to have them in my possession. If anyone wants to trade for an R1, let me know, and I will trade it to you. Since there is currently only one of that card, I will leave it up to the first bidder to decide if he/she wants to reveal the card. If I get no takers, it will be on the auction block for general viewing by Friday..

All serious offers accepted.

Justin Woods | October 24, 2007
I have The Breeders but I want to know the numbers on your card first.

Russ Wilhelm | October 24, 2007
If Justin declines, or if you don't take his offer as serious, then I'll trade you.

Steve West | October 24, 2007
Posted two private trade offers - go take a look. Sorry, had to take them down but the offer still stands for Sublime or Korn.

Aaron Shurtleff | October 25, 2007
I already have The Breeders, so that's out. The first posted offer after that was from Russ Wilhelm, so I will accept his. But I thank everyone for their interest and if I get another band I can't stand, I promise it will be up for grabs!! :)

Russ Wilhelm | October 25, 2007
Glad I could help, Aaron. You are now one step closer to an Achievement as well.

Tony Peters | October 26, 2007
Jeff Martin or JoJo Woods would either of you interested in a trade U2 for P-Funk

Justin Woods | October 26, 2007
Any one with The Who want Bob Dylan or my pride and joy Led Zepp. for the The Doors first come first serve.

Russ Wilhelm | October 26, 2007
Looking to swap the secret R1 I got from Aaron for Jethro Tull. I'm not repulsed by the band, actually found the music to be likeable, but would rather have a band from my youthful days and Tull fits in well with my label.

Scott Hardie | October 26, 2007
Dibs on Russ's offer (The Artist Formerly Known as Aaron's R1).

Russ Wilhelm | October 26, 2007
It's yours Scott. Thanks.

Hey, if it's not to your liking, pass it on, see how long it stays secret. It's a decent card for an R1.

Scott Hardie | October 26, 2007
Good idea, but nah. I offered Aaron a private trade for it yesterday without calling "dibs" and missed out, or so I thought. I'll hang onto it. It's not a band I like, but any new card is a good card.

Aaron Shurtleff | October 26, 2007
I'm sorry. I guess I could have been more informative as to my method of passing it on. :(

Scott Hardie | October 26, 2007
I chose not to say something here, knowing that it would probably cost me the swap. It's totally my own doing. You were kind even to offer it up.

Aaron Shurtleff | October 26, 2007
Oh, no. You all were kind to take it off my hands! :) Just not my favorite band. Not that the mystery card I got in trade from Russ is high on my list either... ;P

Denise Sawicki | November 7, 2007
Anybody want either Jeff Beck (2233) or Golden Earring (3223)? I will happily trade one of them for whatever R2 you want to get rid of...

Scott Hardie | November 7, 2007
Denise, I'll be happy to take Jeff Beck off your hands. I've offered several R2s for trade; feel free to swap for whichever you like and I'll cancel the others. If you want a different R2 out of my collection than I offered, just ask. Thanks.

Denise Sawicki | November 7, 2007
Hey thanks... I couldn't resist Offspring since it had a 6 on it :P Though given my record lately, big numbers are probably not the greatest strategy.

Scott Hardie | November 7, 2007
Variety is best, if you're stocking your label for strategic advantage. Offspring has turned into a pretty good card.

Aaron Shurtleff | November 23, 2007
Ultra-rare Cheap Trick (R2) available in the Card Exchange! Wow!!! ;)

Jacob Martin | November 23, 2007
Lol ....i actually have 2 cheap tricks as of today

Aaron Shurtleff | November 23, 2007
As do I! :D

Scott Hardie | November 24, 2007
Cheap Trick was already the most-owned band in the game before today. As of now, there are 11 copies out there, with an additional 4 copies owned by inactive players.

Tony Peters | November 24, 2007
yeah I got rid of mine Cheap Trick a month ago now I have it back....then again the last Rock Block I got a double Dave Mathews so all isn't too bad

Russ Wilhelm | November 24, 2007
Cheap Trick is another one of those underated bands. From a musical perspective, they are top notch musicians, who happened to gian fame from two much too popish tunes that kind of set their reputation. I was voting for them to be promoted. Not sure if I still am or not.

Steve West | November 24, 2007
I'd probably trade for them.

Scott Hardie | November 24, 2007
They'll be promoted after today's event ends. They have the most poll votes of any R2 band. See, it's not so bad getting them after all.

I've made too many tweaks to the promotion system lately to explain, but I'll mention that I've taken steps to limit how often you see the promotion poll and how many bands are available as options each time you do, so it's not overwhelming. Also, I have taken Steve's advice (against Russ and Denise's wishes) and adjusted the promotion code so that it now enhances a card's existing sides, rather than randomly rearranging them, meaning that a card strong on a particular side will remain strong on that particular side as it rises in the ranks. This should make promotions a more invisible effect on the game, which is good.

As of today, there are now more cards added to the game since we launched (111) than there were when we started (110). I have to start promoting more frequently, because the "pyramid" is getting too wide at the base and too narrow at the top. Expect to see a lot of promotions over this holiday weekend, then the pace will slow back down again.

Aaron Shurtleff | November 24, 2007
Sorry, Steve, I lost my spare copy to Scott. ;)

Scott Hardie | November 24, 2007
Will somebody please take Roxy Music from me? I respect their influence and all, but the song in that video is one of the most annoying recordings I've ever heard. I think they're the only band I can't tolerate in my collection. (Sorry to fans out there.)

Steve West | November 24, 2007
Ummmm... let me think about it for a .... No.

Scott Hardie | November 24, 2007
Goddamn it!

Aaron Shurtleff | November 24, 2007
Only because you were the only non-purple owner, I took it off your hands. ;)

Scott Hardie | November 24, 2007
Woohoo! Thanks!

Denise Sawicki | November 24, 2007
Well at least I can stop dreading Radiohead getting promoted :P Too late for Journey, though. They are still nice but I'm a bit weak on the right side now.

Scott Hardie | November 24, 2007
I'm tempted to make the new system retroactive to each card's original combination, but I think we'll forget the way they were before long and these combinations will seem normal.

Steve West | November 24, 2007
Goddamn it!

Scott Hardie | November 24, 2007
You'd prefer otherwise? Or are you just channeling your inner Cartman like me? :-)

Steve West | November 24, 2007
Definitely the latter. I miss my Eagles card the way it used to be but I'll get over it. :-)

Tony Peters | November 24, 2007
I see cheap Trick is up for trade....good luck

Amy Austin | November 25, 2007
Goddamn it!

(I want my Def Leppard back the way it used to be! ;-))

Aaron Shurtleff | November 25, 2007
Yay! Card in the exchange!! I'm back to where I was before the Block Party! (more or less)

Of course, now I'll be hearing Dave Chappelle in my head constantly...

Steve West | December 1, 2007
Much as I would like that card, Scott, I have nothing available to trade for it (so Card Exchange tells me). Thanks for the offer.

Amy Austin | December 6, 2007
Scott, I have no idea how I wound up swapping my FOTC for Roxy Music (not that I mind Roxy Music -- I like them and had them before), but I'd like FOTC back, if I may... I must have hit the button on accident recently -- I think I made another (intended) swap on the same night... I just don't know how this one happened! ;-(

(And if you have any preference about Roxy Music & The Only Ones, I'd be happy to accommodate... though you're obviously looking to get rid of both!)

Amy Austin | December 7, 2007
Crap. So now it tells me I don't have anything I can swap... I guess because I swapped it so recently??? Thanks, though...

Scott Hardie | December 7, 2007
No, it's because stupid Roxy Music got promoted and that was your last R1. Well, let's see if you can win it from me, for old times' sake.

Denise Sawicki | February 1, 2008
I don't suppose anybody wants my Cream or Ray Charles for their Buddy Holly, Simon & Garfunkel, or The Cure?

Aaron Shurtleff | February 1, 2008
I'll do it. I have Ray Charles, so I guess I'll take Cream for Buddy Holly. Check the Exchange.

Denise Sawicki | February 1, 2008
Wow, that was quick. Thanks so much!

Tony Peters | February 1, 2008
anyone want to get rid of P-Funk????

Amy Austin | February 5, 2008
I'd really like to swap the only copy of Bad Company (R4, 3-7-2-4) out for one of the following: Bauhaus, BeeGees, Boston, Seger, James Taylor, Journey, Marilyn Manson, Talking Heads, The Monkees... or any other R4 with strength on the left/top (especially left, where my cards are weakest overall). Talking Heads would be choicest here.

Thanks!

Denise Sawicki | February 5, 2008
I put Marilyn Manson out there for you, feel free to wait for a better offer though.

Tony Peters | February 5, 2008
check the trade page Amy

Amy Austin | February 5, 2008
Thank you, Denise... but I *really* wanted Talking Heads -- thanks, Tony! ;-)

Tony Peters | February 5, 2008
I had 3 R4's strong that way and you weren't getting my Bauhaus you are welcome....and Bad Company actually does me a lot of good

Amy Austin | February 5, 2008
Yeah, I didn't expect Bauhaus from you... and I wanted TH more besides -- thanks again.

Amy Austin | February 5, 2008
It's funny... David Byrne is here alongside TH -- I think we need some Peter Murphy now. ;-)

Tony Peters | February 5, 2008
and "Tones on Tail" or "Love and Rockets"
