If you haven't heard, Osama bin Laden's half-brother's American daughter will appear scantily clad in the new issue of GQ. (link) Her goal is to feel more accepted by Americans and to "stop hiding." Is anybody else here disgusted that a woman feels like taking her clothes off is the only way to gain acceptance by her countrymen? Or that taking her clothes off is the only way for an intelligent, worldly woman to earn a paycheck? Both represent some of America's most ignoble values, and that's the problem: Even if you're not disgusted, you can bet the Muslim world will be. You'd think someone descended from that world would be a little more sensitive to why it hates American values so much. It doesn't give terrorists a right to blow us up, but when I look at our culture through their eyes, I'm pretty disgusted too.

True. After this, I have no illusions that she's affiliated with him in any way, not that I did before. My disgust isn't with her or her choice exactly, it's with the idea that nekkid woman = American values. When did we get to this point? I'm hardly a sexual prude; I don't object to sex in the media in general, just the suggestion that being the target of tawdry sexual voyeurism makes you an American woman. There's something fucked up about that.
