Netflix has a hit on their hands with Tiger King, in the wake of Making a Murderer, Don't Fuck with Cats, Evil Genius, Last Chance U, Cheer, The Family, The Casketeers, and more documentary shows about weird or maleficent people.

Back in the 2000s, there was a tsunami of terrible trashy reality TV shows, especially on basic cable. These shows tended to exploit their subjects for their eccentricity, inviting the audience to gawk at their weirdness or misdeeds. Some people watched the shows, but generally we as a society recognized that these shows were garbage and bad for the soul. You don't see nearly as much of them now as in their heyday.

Are Netflix's documentary series just the same garbage in a slick new package? Are they so well presented that we don't recognize the similarity? Imagine a show like Tiger King being on TLC circa 2004; it doesn't look as good but it's basically the same. Am I wrong?
