Reading this article about the long-ago crossover between The Simpsons and The X Files got me wondering: Could the latter series be successfully resurrected in animation? The obvious model would be Batman: The Animated Series, which was grim and sophisticated and stylishly animated. Growing older wouldn't be a problem for Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, and doing just voice acting would leave them plenty of time for other commitments. Animation would be much cheaper to produce, and would free the series to create even grander visions than what was possible in the live action X Files. I don't know if the resulting program would be worth watching, but I do wonder if the basic concept would work.

Apparently The X Files can be resurrected in live action, too. I'm as thrilled as any fan at the news. If I have any single wish for the new series, it's not for every minor character to make a comeback, nor for resolution to certain storylines (as satisfying as that would be, after hoping in vain for years to see a third film). Really, I just want the new shows to be good. The original series, for all of its many great moments, had some lousy episodes that fizzled out. We'll only get six of these, unless lightning strikes twice and more are produced, so let's hope the magic can be recreated.
