What do you make of Tiger Woods's comeback over the weekend?

I can't help but be reminded of another comeback after many years. :-)

Tiger so dominated the sport of golf that when he fell, it seemed catastrophic. His medical problems, his personal problems, his terrible decline at the sport itself, they all seemed like they'd consumed him. And yet, he sort of limped onward, barely noticed. For him to restore himself to this level is amazing.

And I'm well aware of the silly narrative arcs that we have about celebrities. First we have to elevate them on a pedestal, as if their success is deeply meaningful. Then we have to tear them down, because we can't stand living among giants. Then, if they last long enough, we have to re-elevate them. We have such strange relationships to celebrities in this country.

Anyway, if you want to read a good article by someone who can articulate the significance of Tiger's comeback better than I can, see Thomas Friedman's column this week.
