You Say Tomato... I Say... Uh...

Both sound like instances of an English-speaking narrator -- seems to be the preference for these things! Neither pronunciation is all that surprising if this is the case.

Perhaps the Discovery channel narrator was French and unable to pronounce the "th" sound?
I used to think archipelago was "ar-cheh-pel-AY-go" until I heard Jeff Probst, undeniably American, pronounce it "ar-keh-PEL-eh-go." Not such a big difference to you maybe, but I'm planning to run an RPG set on an archipelago, and I'm already considered a jackass well enough in my gaming group that I don't need to make it worse. :-P

A jackass we don't consider you a jackass...
OCD maybe...
your thought process maybe...
but that's part of your charm... :)

Patrick's right, smartass maybe, but not a jackass.

Thanks, fellas. I'm glad to know I misunderestimated myself once again.

I still sometimes mispronounce words I've only seen in print. It's embarassing. The worst was when I was 12 years old and I told my father about a "ho-ax." He seemed puzzled for a while, but soon figured out I was talking about a hoax. My wife got busted a couple years ago for pronouncing epitome "epi-toam" instead of "epit-o-ME."
I'm still not clear on the prounciation of stalwart...

I do the same thing. It's so embarassing, isn't it? My case feels even worse because sometimes in trying to pronounce the word, I get a little stutter in the middle and it doesn't come out at all recognizable. Luckily, Jesse can usually tell what I'm saying and helps me out.

Is it flutist or flautist and are they both pronounced the same way?

All the flute players I've known have said, "Flautist."
