Try "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. One of my favorite books of all time, and it has a sequel of sorts, "Anansi Boys" He's the same author who wrote "Stardust" and "MirrorMask" which have been made into movies.

Did you hear about Anne Rice's final Lestat novel? She may have turned into a Christian author and sworn she'd never write about vampires again, but last week she announced that she was writing one final Lestat novel, from a Christian perspective, that brings the series to a close.
Yay.
Anyway, good luck making the Japan trip soon. It does sound great. :-)
