Whose star system are we talking about here? Scott's? Ebert's?

In that case, I'd guess that they pay a nominal fee or offer free publicity to some real critic to use his or her star ratings. www.imdb.com used to have such a deal with Leonard Maltin, for instance, and it's cheaper than paying someone on staff to rate movies.

Hey, at least you didn't pay ten bucks at the theater to see them.

How can I get sell my star ratings to these companies, I wonder? Everybody wants to know that Palindromes was a great movie.

Sometimes I wonder about those syndicated Leonard Maltin reviews on IMDb. Not only are they now twelve years old and counting – Col Needham must have struck the deal with Maltin back when Dakota Fanning was in the womb – but IMDB has staff reviewers, and pretty good ones at that.

IMDB no longer uses them, having switched to using amazon reviews (no doubt to get kickbacks for linked-through purchases).
