So Detective Lauer has decided that what the Today Show needs is more attitude? Maybe he's angling for a role on Law & Order when his contract is up. Joking aside, I bet that part of the reason that his "tough" line of questioning seems so incongruent is that it's the friggin' Today Show. They try, but they just don't do hard news very well. The last time I tuned in was one morning in July at the beginning of the show; they rushed through a somber story about a fatal Venezuelan plane crash, then dwelled merrily on an exploding steam pipe in downtown NYC, the final Harry Potter book, and that weekend's Emmys. Score one for mainstream journalism.
