you know...I've been out of the country for the last decade or so...so I have not had the displeasure of having to watch the whole election process. I had no idea the garbage I have been missing. It's seriously making me contemplate leaving the country again when I retire

It's all ratings. I haven't checked the numbers, but I'm sure Rush got a spike in listeners for a few days after his odious comments made headlines. Howard Stern has made a career out of it.

One problem with local elections in Sarasota is that our U.S. House district has seen some extremely negative campaign calls from the Repulican camp. Newspaper articles detailed how automated dialers would call people a half-dozen times each evening, sometimes calling back within seconds of the previous call, to inform them of how the Democratic candidate was incompetent or corrupt or whatever they were. Her name is now shorthand between my mom and me for how fed up we got with the ridiculous campaign season, because several such calls interrupted our evening each time we got together at her house. After the election, the Democratic candidate alleged that the local machines were rigged (today's recount results indicate otherwise), and we wondered if we weren't going to get blasted with pre-recorded phone calls that she was trying to undermine the democratic process and standing in the way of justice and blah blah blah.
