America has many regional foods. What would you recommend to a traveller who wanted to experience a sampling of the best?

NY Bagels

Anna Gregoline | August 18, 2004
Oooh, Philly cheese steak!

Dave Stoppenhagen | August 18, 2004
I have to go with the California Mexican Food, Chicago Dog's, 90 Shilling(Colorado Micro Brew so thick it could be food, but smooth as silk), A baseball steak from Manny's in Minneapolis, Louisianna Gumbo, and Rockin Baha Lobster.

Scott Horowitz | August 18, 2004
I have to disagree Anna. I had a Philly Cheesesteak from both Pats and Genos (the 2 famous places in Philly) and I was not impressed.

Anna Gregoline | August 18, 2004
Well, I've never had an authentic ones, but I've had some good ones in Illinois.

Boardwalk Fries alive and well in Maryland - agree. Chicago ribs, Texas Angus steak, Chesapeake Bay crab cakes, North Carolina fried catfish & hushpuppies.

Anna Gregoline | August 19, 2004
Ok, Melissa. We have to take a trip to Maryland!

Scott H:

Pat's and Geno's SUCK!!! They are right across the street from each other, competing and they both SUCK!!

You gotta go to Tony Luke's on Oregon Avenue South Philly (just under I-95).

I'm hopin' I can get down there this weekend. I need my fix.

As far as Pizza goes...gimme my home town pizza here in NY. I guess Chicago pizza is good, but if you can't buy a slice, take it with you and eat it while walking...then what good is it?

Of course, while you're here in NYC, you gotta get a dirty water frank and a pastrami sammich from Katz or the Carnegie Deli.

Oh...belly bombers from White Castle!

Anna Gregoline | August 19, 2004
Anthony - there are plenty of places you can buy a slice. I've done it several times.

Anthony Lewis | August 19, 2004
Anna - For real? I've only been in Chicago twice. Total of five days. Hmmm...me thinks a return trip is in order.

Anna Gregoline | August 19, 2004
Yep. I can't tell you where I did it, off the top of my head, but I know I've done it once at a place on Clark street, near Belmont. And several other places. Probably not as prominent a feature as New York, but it can be done! I'm more of a Chicago hot dog girl myself, though. =)

What is the deal with Portillo's hot dogs in Chicagoland? I have tried them three times and they always fell far short of the buzz. My own favorite hot dog is served Kansas City style: Barbecue sauce, shredded Cheddar cheese, and bacon bits. (I like to add chopped onion.)

To the Floridian cuisine list I'd add two of my favorites, grouper Oscar and Key Largo chicken.

Of course, there's also the Nawlins menu that Dave mentioned... jambalaya, shrimp Creole, popcorn rice, beef grillades, crawfish tails, cole slaw, cheese grits, dirty rice... man, I'm gettin' hungry.

And of course there's an entire Hawaiian cuisine that stretches beyond ham and pineapple pizza... but I don't want to type it out for risk of needing to cook a second dinner. :-)

When I think of chocolate, I think of Fannie Mae and Marshall Field's, both Chicagoan. Didn't Field's shut down their candy division recently?

Anthony Lewis | August 20, 2004
I read somewhere today that Maxim magazine crowned the best sandwich in America to be the "Fat Darrell". It's a comination of chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks and french fries on a roll with marinara sauce. Sounded interesting for awhile. Then looking at the ingredients, I realized that it's nothing but a Chicken Parmasean Sandwich with fries. What's so special about that? It's good for sure, but gee whiz it ain't THAT special.

Fannie May shutdown most of their plants and closed all of the stores. Now they have re-opened a couple the last I heard.

Ever since the pizza discussion, I can't stop seeing "Buy a Slice" pizza places around Chicago. There is one a block from my house in Andersonville, and I saw like three on my way to work this morning downtown.
