There's no feeling quite like discovering a great new song. It tickles your ears as you listen to it over and over, dancing on your heels. You want to tell everybody about it. And then, after a few days, it's ho-hum and you begin the search for the next one.

Here's your chance to share your current musical infatuation. What song has you enchanted this week?

Scott Hardie | June 24, 2008
I like every Lily Allen song I've heard so far, but "Alfie" blows the others out of the water. A rare double-threat, it has a great video too:

Pretty funny... the puppet really resembles him! Definitely catchy.

I like The Flaming Lips, too -- however, this one will probably remain my perennial favorite from them:

Gosh... it's got to be at least ten years old... d'oh! -- make that fifteen!!! (I didn't realize college days were quite that far behind me now!!!)

A nice... *choke/gag*... love song -- very pretty melody & lyrics... just not something I can listen to much these days without serious blues/pain. Not the "official video" (embedding disabled by request), but a nice photo compilation nonetheless. You can Google it yourself to see Mr. Pigg's b&w one, if you like (or just click link above)... there's also another nice one that I think is a Smallville compilation? (Just a guess, since I don't watch the show myself...)

I know Scott likes Aimee Mann, too, so he probably already knows this one... but worth posting, I think:

Okay... I'll try to stop hogging now... ;-)

Amy Austin | June 24, 2008
Okay, sorry... one more (I've got to sleep *sometime*, right?) -- but this one just really gives me a whole new perspective on Death Cab For Cutie (the band *and* the name!)... be warned, though, (aside from stalker lyrics!) that the intro is kind of painfully long (4+ minutes):

Heheh... I was so busy posting vids that I didn't even see yours until I was done, Lori! Gotta' say that those first long horn sounds reminded me immediately of the old Get Smart theme song! ;-D

Amy Austin | June 24, 2008
Hahaha... you snuck one in on me again! ;-DDD (*Why* am *I* still up!?! Not that this is anything new, mind you...)

Okay, you brought this one on yourself with that (I can definitely see the comparison!) Monty Pythonish song:

Not the biggest fan of the Stooges, but -- like Meatloaf would say -- two out of three ain't bad, though! ;-DDD

Amy Austin | June 24, 2008
No need to round up, Crazy... it's still only 0325 here, *not* "almost 4" for another twenty minutes!!! ;-p

Amy Austin | June 24, 2008
I can see how that would make a cool ringtone. ;-)

Amy Austin | June 24, 2008
Good job -- you managed to pick the toss-up song there (the one you posted actually sounds more similar to "The Lumberjack Song", imo)... I just thought "I Like Chinese" was funnier for addressing you in this particular situation -- I seriously doubt there's a Monty Python tune that I don't enjoy, though.

Now, dammit, I need to get to sleep before it's completely pointless! I think you should call to wake me up at work tomorrow! (uh... later today! ;-p)

Amy Austin | June 24, 2008
Well, at this rate, I'm not going to get to sleep until it's totally inappropriate... ;-7

Just had to comment that after listening to a few more Lily Allen songs, I think I need to get some of that! I also find it intriguing how much she reminds me of another song I like a lot of late -- Ingrid Michaelson... she's like a cross between Lily Allen and Lisa Loeb... or something... O-o

(And yeah... the "official video" kinda' weirds me out...)

Dave Stoppenhagen | June 24, 2008
You two have completely lost it. I was getting up at this last post time.

Amy Austin | June 24, 2008
I know. Believe me... being me is punishment enough. ;-p

(Btw, Lori... I can't see these at work, so that won't cut it for "waking me up"... ;-p)

Let's see if I did this right... Good!

And feel fortunate I didn't put up any Light This City, which I actually have a Song Crush on! *sigh*

Amy Austin | June 25, 2008
Another Ingrid Michaelson tune (another fan video/slideshow compilation w/nice imagery) that's gotten some airplay -- think I'd like to hear more of her, too:

Amy Austin | June 25, 2008
Okay... so not a new song, but definitely a video crush... of sorts. Was sent this today -- I dare you not to cry, especially if you love animals like I do (try to ignore the bad spelling!):

In the PTOs this year, one of my surest picks was for the winning song of the year, "Falling Slowly" from Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (aka The Swell Season)'s indie movie Once. Knowing nothing about anything, except hearing it on the radio, my gut reaction to the song paid off. I had not, and still have not, seen the movie -- though I want to -- as I have the distinct feeling that it would be very hard on me (I think I will save that for a day when I feel like wallowing). Another song -- "When Your Mind's Made Up" -- also featured in the trailer, has gotten some airplay and only reinforces my notion. I find it similarly moving and post it to commemorate my 8th anniversary. Hmm... maybe today would be the day to see it after all...

Yes, I'm still getting hung up on songs that torture my heart. For how much longer, I wish I could say. But there is at least one song that I think will just always remind me of Ed... because of its appearance on the Jerry Maguire soundtrack, which is also just one of those movies that will always remind me of him. Not only has Jerry been a frequent flyer on cable of late, but the song also happens to appear on yet another bummer movie's soundtrack -- Hanging Up, which is another one of those sucky parent-child-sibling relationship movies that always brings me down!

No surprise behind the appeal of the song, though... leave it to that genius songwriter, Sir Paul McCartney, to stir it up. The song has a couple of versions... there's the lyrically-stripped, mostly piano and drums, instrumental version (as heard in Jerry Maguire and included in its unplugged edition below) -- "Singalong Junk" -- as well as the romantically versed (especially when sung by darling Paul) "Junk":

Unplugged "Singalong":

British soul singer/songwriter Adele has had this hit floating around for about a year now, but with the natural overseas lag time, it's just now starting to get really big here. Quite a few British songbirds around these days, it seems. Anyway... I'm really liking both the song and video to it:

Aaron Shurtleff | November 25, 2008
Kind of a sad song, but the more word of mouth about this lovely young chanteuse, the better!! Here's A Fine Frenzy with the song "Almost Lover"

Of course, it doesn't embed... here's a link:

Beautiful!!

Amy Austin | November 25, 2008

Hint: search song title under video, and look for embedding in more than first result -- "official video" always a good bet

Aaron Shurtleff | November 25, 2008
Aw! But I like official videos! :)

Thanks, Amy!!!

I can't express how much I'm going to miss my radio station, WMVY (Martha's Vineyard), when I leave here. It is, quite frankly, the best radio station I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. I love it so much that I don't even mess with the radio tuner in my car -- yes, that's right, I even tolerate the commercials and so-so songs (because there are so few of either) to wait for the next gem that might come over the air waves. Sigh... at least there's the option of streaming online -- it won't help me in the car, where I listen to radio the most, but it might help a bit whenever I get "homesick" for this spot that has grown on me far more than I was aware and am now loathe to leave.

One of the gems introduced to me by MVY -- Richard Thompson (formerly of Fairport Convention, whom I'd never heard of before RB!). Two songs, each of which spoke to me very deeply when I heard them... "Persuasion" and "Just the Motion" (initially heard covered by David Byrne, incidentally... whom I also love):

("Persuasion", with his son:)

("Just the Motion", solo:)

("Just the Motion", with his wife and preceded by another song, "Pavanne":)

Players who spent hours trying in vain to solve her goo will probably wince whenever they see her name forevermore, but I discovered Santogold's music after creating her goo and she's got several outstanding songs. I've been crushing on this song in particular for a week, and I can only say so now that the goo is expired.

Amy Austin | January 25, 2009
True enough. Pretty sick video, too.

Scott Hardie | January 25, 2009

Not my favoritest Dave Matthews song ever, but... while visiting one of my RB favorites, I see that all the videos are broken ("embedding disabled by request"), and so I went to collect them afresh. A handful of just awesome videos posted by a fan are from Storytellers (and therefore, may possibly disappear again) -- not only are these just incredible acoustic performances, but there's added comedic value in the "storytelling" aspect... this one, in particular, is like my worst nightmare with roaches (the story is about crickets, though) and why I *always*... "crush & flush":

Amy Austin | March 12, 2009
More bathroom horror stories from Dave... (oh, what I'd give to have been the person working the lobby that night!):

Returning to the artist who was the original inspiration for this discussion (Lily Allen)... another cute-as-a-button (or cute-as-Linda-Ronstadt, I say) performance of another song that speaks entirely for itself:

(I can't help wondering if there's some quietly embarrassed guy out there who knows this one's about him...)

Yeah I have been listening to a lot of Killers while I'm doing homework in the library....thank the gods for DJ headphones

Amy Austin | November 27, 2009
Barenaked Ladies isn't in RB yet?!?!?! Sigh... I don't have enough birthdays. You can't get much cooler than recording some intimate jams for YouTube and naming it The Bathroom Sessions, though... brilliant!

been listening to a lot of Placebo recently while writing....not sure if that's good or bad but it's been the music that helps me work

And speaking of Muppets... I really miss Sesame Street. Can somebody please tell me how to get there? Is the rent there any cheaper?

Look! It's an AMV -- or "Animated Music Video", as I've recently learned -- not to be confused with AMY... which is what "AMV" kind of looks like without my glasses on, lol:

Nothing's fair in love and hate. And Monsterlieben would be a good name for a metal muppet band, I think.
