Music as a muse
by Tony Peters on August 6, 2011

since I restarted school music has become a more dominant part of my daily activities. I have used up/worn out a number of pairs of headphones finally inventing in a set of Grado's and a CMoy amp so I can tune out the world while I am in the studio. my taste in music has changed significantly in the last 2 years......while I still enjoy punk rock and hardcore, I have been listening to a lot of acoustic music lately, decemberist, mumford and sons etc, but the real change has been how much Jazz (hiromi) and Jazz based breakbeat, I can only sculpt efficiently when I have a consistant beat (Mocean worker, Mr Scruff, Hexstatic, Xploding Plastix, Propellerheads etc) if woodchips are flying chances are I have jazz breakbeat between my ears. I really can't think of a time when I'm creating that I'm not listening to music

I call him Sushi........
My wife and I have a thing for Amberjack......this is my final sculpture (required anyway) for the semester I shot these before I finished welding the rest of the chain on (5-6 hours today) right now he's covered in salt getting rained on in hope of promoting a patina which I can clear coat. The plan is to add numbers and hang him on the front porch in place of the numbers now there...I'll Go »

OK I have what is called closed angles in my eye's which although I have no symptoms is considered a precursor to glaucoma...I've known this for a couple of years and since my maternal grandfather had glaucoma and my father has the same problem with his eyes I've really just been putting off having corrective surgery since I returned from Japan 2 years ago. What this means is that the eye's drains which are behind the iris are not as open as they should be which can lead to increased fluid pressure in the eye and posible damage to the optic nerve, or so they tell me. Last day skateboarding of 2007
OK I admit that a 41 year old man finding a day of enjoyment skateboarding might sound strange but I find it centers me and provides a source of exercise that I can't find else ware. That said I spent the day working on my tuck, downhilling in a nearby neighborhood. I lost count of the number of times I went down the half mile hill my legs are feeling the hike back up (gotta earn those runs) so I'm gonna guess more than 20 times and I know I listened to at least 6 hours of music on my Ipod. Art........
OK so since the summer my creative obsession has been growing. It started in my drawing 2 class with a professor who would turn out to be the man who has completely changed how I both look at and create art, Ben Anderson is an interesting man The first serious piece of the semester was Morf, a Gargoyle I created using mostly found metal from a local bike shop (I have taken to visiting on a weekly basis to acquire additional materials....Morf was the first time I have had a piece of art that I am woking to create completely dominate my thoughts. Driving in europe.
OK one of the more enjoyable part of my job is the fact that I get to drive overseas. Part of this is due to the fact that I have had an international diving permit for 7 years now and another part is that I am actually used to driving on the wrong side of the road. (3 years in Japan). Go »

I'm glad to hear that you've found so much pleasure in new music. As much as I'd like to drown out the noise around me, I find that I can't listen to music at work too often, because I face too many interruptions to get deep into it. I've created lots of stations on Pandora and enjoyed many -- the hair metal station seeded with Def Leppard and Bon Jovi would make Aaron Shurtleff proud -- but unexpectedly, indie rock is the one I keep coming back to. I've been happy to add some of its best to Rock Block: Metric, Ting Tings, Sounds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I should have gotten into these bands a long time ago.
