explanation: Mary Stuart, often referred to as Mary, Queen of Scots, became the monarch at merely six days of age upon the death of her father, James V, in December 1542. She reigned during a time of rising discontent with the royalty. After an uprising in April 1567 that left her imprisoned in a castle, she was forced to abdicate the throne in July 1567. She fled to England hoping to gain the protection of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, but instead she was confined to a series of castles and manor houses for the next 19 years.
