sticky nasty weekend
by Tony Peters on June 9, 2008

Ok this is new england it's not supposed to be this hot...I'm sure Amy actually feels at home but it's been too long since I lived in Guam this is hot. I had plans for this weekend but instead other than a dump run I tried to stay in and stay cool. I failed on both accounts because I needed to do some work in my garage...even the dog was unhappy spending time outside and readily accepted being hosed off. But my garage is more organized though still not clean...I got rid of a kayak...got our bikes hung from the rafters and after not accomplishing enough ended up soaked to the skin
The highlight of my weekend was the realization that our new computer fund was full...so i have a new (to me) refurb Macbook on its way to me this week...I finally get to become completely bilingual. I have been looking forward to switching to a Mac for the last few years, my complete annoyance with windows and my present computer's continuing registry errors and I'm ready for a change...

oh I know I lived in Guam for 4 years, In Guam it only drops out of the 90's (with 100% humidity) when a typhoon rolls through...and most of that temperture drop is windchill; 100-200mph winds chill regardless of the ambient temp. I'm just whining because I don't like hot weather, and days like today (also in the high 90's) make me yearn for someplace like Portland

Oh what a day
After spending the morning cleaning and setting up for a visit from my inlaws (looking forward to that being over) I spent the afternoon Downhill skateboarding with a bunch of guys...life is so simple with a bit of speed. I'm the 4th guy to enter the screen, Black shirt, Blue helmet, Pink wheels trying to stay in the draft of the two kids in a tight draft train. Go »
the next grand adventure..........
as a retired sailor I really thought nothing of deploying and leaving my wife with the cats and dog at home while I went off to fight wars, fix submarines and otherwise earn a living.......now the shoe is on the other foot. I am in school fulltime taking care of the cats, the dog the house and whatever else pops up while my wife and best friend moves to DC to take her dream job. Go »

Pain on a whole new level
good afternoon/evening folks something happened on the way to work this morning, I touched my brakes and either my tires were cold or I hit some sand, the next thing I knew I was on the ground with my bike on top of me. The end result is I broke my right ankle. It's swollen a bit today and likely needs surgery I have an ortho appointment on monday and hopefully surgery on tuesday. Go »
got a new drug
2 weeks ago I sold my BMX cruiser with the intention of shedding a toy to buy a bike better suited to commuting to work, at one time I rode a racebike and i really wanted to start riding one again except with the simplicity that I enjoyed on my cruiser....so I bought a fixxed gear, no not going through a mid life crisis I have ridden a fixxed gear before and I know what's involved, it arrived last friday and after a scramble to assemble it (and switch the brakes to motostyle) I rode it to work, I have ridden to work every day for the last week (because it only rains on my day off) and my legs are just starting to adjust I have aches in places I haven't felt in years but I feel better and judging by the way my pants feel I'm sure I'm starting to look healthier too. No riding a fixie is not for everybody, I have people who give me terrified looks when they realize what I'm riding but it works for me and thats what is important, besides when the weather is nice I can leave after work and ride down to the beach and back on a 20 mile loop and still get home in time to make dinner for my wife and I. You get used to every summer day being hot here, so you almost don't notice when there's a real scorcher. Friends up north have to point out the scalding temperatures across the country for it to sink in. I've heard from several this weekend.
